COSHH Assessment — Granite Dust (Respirable Crystalline Silica / RCS)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers granite dust generated during cutting, grinding and drilling of granite — a complex silicate mineral typically containing 20–30% quartz (respirable crystalline silica / RCS). Granite dust is classified as a Group 1 human carcinogen due to its RCS content; health surveillance is mandatory for regularly exposed workers.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name (Granite Dust), chemical name (complex silicate with 20–30% quartz / RCS), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation causing silicosis (progressive irreversible lung disease) and lung cancer; ingestion and eye irritation; specific first aid and requirement to report exposure for occupational health monitoring
- Group 1 carcinogen — RCS in granite dust causes silicosis and lung cancer; even relatively short high-exposure events can cause acute silicosis; wet cutting, LEV and RPE are all required
- Workplace exposure limits — RCS TWA 0.1 mg/m³ over 8 hours — very low limit reflecting the silicosis and cancer risk; health surveillance required for regularly exposed workers
- CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Long-term health hazard pictograms
- PPE requirements — including FFP3 respirator, eye protection, wet cutting methods and LEV at source
- Emergency procedures — do not dry sweep; use vacuum or wet methods; dispose of as construction waste
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where granite is cut, ground or drilled, including:
- Stonemasonry and monumental masonry workshops
- Kitchen and bathroom worktop fabricators
- Construction contractors cutting granite paving or cladding
- Quarrying and stone processing operations
